Getting Lost in the Novel: The Impassioned Movements of the Self in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century British Fiction focuses on moments when characters get socially or geographically lost at which they also fail to understand their experiences. I argue that attending closely to these moments reorients our understanding of subgenres of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British novel (the marriage-plot, the gothic, the Bildungsroman, and the sensation novel) toward both the protagonist's and the reader's moment-to-moment experience.
